A Case of an Enormous Frontal Sinus Pyocele

Abstract
|
|
|
A case of an enormous frontal sinus pyocele (accompanied with septum defect and fistula formation) with right chronic maxillary sinusitis and ethmoiditis is reported with a review of literatures.
The patient was a farmer, aged 53, who complained of right exophthalmus, a swelling that occured on the superior portion of right inner canthus, rhinorrhoea and anosmia.
After the Killian¢¥ s operation. procedure, the patient made an uneventful recovery. Macro, and Microscopic findings of this pyocele were as follows :
1. The pyocele was filled with a large cyst containing 50cc of thick muco-purulent secretion showed weak acid reaction.
2. It was confirmed that the septum was almost defected.
3. The microscopic examination of the purulent secretion revealed; cholesterin crystal, destroyed leucocytes, staphylococci aureus, and pneumococci.
4. Histologic examination of the wall of this pyocele revealed; the distended, catarrhal, and mu.co-periosteal lining of the sinus throughout.
